MANTON-GREENE HOUSE (CIRCA 1710)
One of the earliest American structures that remain in the US, this structure was saved from demolition and relocated to a hilltop overlooking three New England states. The house was originally built in Johnston, Rhode Island by John Manton, and was later home to his son-in-law Joshua Greene, a descendant of Surgeon John Greene (founder of Rhode Island).
Having fallen into disrepair and threatened by the development of a nearby highway, Ken and Linda Rapoport purchased the house in 1995 from the Rhode Island Historical Society. The structure was meticulously documented, and underwent a museum quality restoration utilizing curators from Old Sturbridge Village. All the hardware, floorboards, moldings are original, including the hand wrought nails & pegged frame.
Hidden beneath the skin are 21st century technologies, affording luxuries such as radiant heat, steam shower and state-of-the art electrical wiring. We have two antique rooms available, each with their own private bath.
